RE: Dual pane window question

When I bought the trailer in my sig I did not know it had dual pane window. The salesperson never mentioned it and I did not notice that it had dual panes since I had never really looked that closely at a trailers windows. This is my 3rd 5ver and both previous ones were weekend trailers and had Jalousie windows. The first trip out in the Newmar it was early spring. I kept mentioning to the DW that i could not believe how soundproof the trailer was. We were in a rather noisy campground yet it was dead quiet in the trailer. The first two nights it was downright eerie how quiet it was inside the trailer. The next day out of curiosity I started to investigate the windows. That's when I realized they were double thickness panes of glass. It was then that the dim light bulb went on in my head and I realized the trailer had dual-pane windows. I also then noticed how they differed in the way they opened compared to the normal Jalousie style and how that contributed to their insulation values. Needless to say I love them and a long time from now when I'm ready to purchase another trailer for full-timing (retirements not for at least 8 years) it will have dual panes as well.

RE: Closed Service Centers on the 401

The travel services in Ontario along the 401 corridor are an embarrassment. I would rather travel any day along a US interstate. Way up north between Cochrane and Hearst along HWY 11 I found excellent rest stops last month, but none along the 401 corridor!!!!! What a joke!!!

RE: Crossing into Canada

Thanks for all of the advice from all who responded. I forgot one other question. Will I have any problems with customs over my pet, a small dog? I will have her rabies & other medical info with me.
I believe the rabies certificate has to be within the last 30days of your time of entry if I remember correctly, maybe someone else can verify....Brian
Carry with you all your dogs health paper's and be prepared to show your rabies vaccination certificate. They sometimes ask just to see you reach for it. The Canadian Border Agency now will accept the 3 year vaccine certificate. Our standards up till recently were 1 year rabies shots but a couple years ago they switched to 3yr rabies shots.
Enjoy.

lowering rear end of 4X4 Dodge Ram

FIL just called to say he traded TV's. He is going from a 2WD to a 4WD and will have a clearance problem with his 2001 Titanium 5ver and his new 4X4 TV's bed rails. He purchased any 04 Ddoge Ram 2500 4X4 with stock but higher box height. The height of the bed rails are a full 4 inches higher with the new 4wd TV than with the older 2wd TV. He really does not want to flip the trailer axles because the height of the steps would jump at least 5 inches. I know you can remove the large axle spacers on ford 4X4, but can you also remove spacer on the Dodge 4X4 to lower the rear end a couple inches. He had about 7 inches clearance with the old TV and does not want to go less than 5 inches, but he wants to tow level.
Any suggestions, pictures or thoughts would be appreciated.

RE: We've Been Robbed!

Bruce you don't know how right you are unless you have imported a vehicle. Canadian Custom's never inspected our title documents, nor did they even do a cursory search of the unit at all. we could have been smuggling whatever we wanted inside the trailer across the border. All our civil servants wanted to see was a receipt stating purchase price and the tax was calculated on that amount.
My DW and I were shocked and horrified at the how easy it was to import something that large with absolutely no inspection of anything to do with it whatsoever.
Now when we went into the Ontario vehicle licensing office we had some difficulty getting the clerk to accept the transferred ownership and the New York title papers, In fact at first they refused to accept the title documents and stated they weren't sufficient to show ownership. I had to request a supervisor more familiar with out of country documentation procedures before they would title and license it in Ontario.

RE: We've Been Robbed!

WOW!!! What a story.
I purchased a US trailer back in December 07 from a dealer in New York, but before I sign any purchase contract I call the Canadian Ministry of Transportation to validate said vehicle's VIN number. As a caveat to any Canadian considering purchasing a US vehicle, validate the vehicle's Vin prior to purchasing. This ensure that the 16 digit VIN is valid and can be registered in Canadian after importation. If the reported Canadian purchaser of the Walmart parking lot private sale trailer had run the VIN through the Canadian Ministry of Transport vehicle registry system with a simple phone call they would have been told the VIN number was invalid and could not be registered in Canada. Don't trust the Canadian border custom agents to validate VIN number. When we imported ours the agent never even bothered to get out of his chair to come outside and visual inspect VIN number when we paid our taxes. I do not believe for any instant that the border agency validated the VIN number at the border. All they wanted was there tax dollars. The VIN number is checked for validity when you go to license the trailer in your province of residence.

RE: Be aware border crossing

My co-worker husband of 20 years has a break and enter conviction on his record from when he was a troubled teenager. He has been clean since. He cannot travel to the US whatsoever since he has not applied for the waiver. Major hassle and costs to get the waiver. Thats why I keep reminding my 18 year old son to keep his nose clean since he wants to travel extensively.

RE: Fresh fruit & veggies into Canada ...

We shop weekly in the US and the only items you can't bring back into Canada is potatoes and blueberries according to the Candian food inspection agency online importation reference system of the many products I have searched on. Canadian Food Inspection Online Import Reference System Interestingly sweet potatoes are acceptable while normal potatoes are restricted due to potatoe bugs. Now you do have to declare on the website source location and final destination so their certainly could be regional variances to the restrictions.

RE: Help with Disc Brakes

If you had done a search for this topic before you asked your question you would have found this Sherr20's Illustrated Disc Brake Conversion How-to thread. It appears to be the best "How-to" for the disc brake conversion. That search button at the top works almost as good as Google for finding things related to RV's. You should try it out if you want instant answers.

RE: Carpet Replacement Dilemma. Now what do I do??

Three weeks ago we had our carpet replaced while we were in Elkhart. It involved only 2 slides as we didn't redo the BR. Three guys were working on it and we did not see anyone loafing. Total cumulative time was 22 hours. My guess is that the BR would add significant time in that they would have to deal with the bed frame being in the way the entire time. I'm sure they've developed a way to do that (as they have for lifting the slideouts) but it would still be a PIA in a small area.
The job turned out very well and I would equate the quality to 'factory new'.
Thanks for the reply. What shop in Elkhart did you have do the work? Would you recommend them for someone else??
Thanks

Carpet Replacement Dilemma. Now what do I do??

I have received 2 quotes for the replacement of carpeting in my coach. One from Newmar and another from Precision RV Interiors. Newmar quote 37 hours labour to R&R the carpeting, while Precsion quoted 10 hours labour to R&R the carpeting. Difference in the two labour quotes is ridiculous. While I can't imagine how it could take 37 hours do it, looking at the job myself I am afraid that 10 hours does not seem long enough for a quality job considering all the fitting required. Guess I'll be looking for a third quote. My coach is a 3 slide unit with carpeting in all 3 slides. Does anyone have any experience with replacing carpet and the time required?
Cheers

RE: Questions before crossing to U.S.

No meats, fruits or vegetables. This includes pet food and processed meats. We just buy our food in the US. You can bring condiments and bread and other baked goods. But since your already going shopping I always just get everything I need across the border. You wilbe mazed at the selection and the prices of some products such as meat.

RE: Is Newmar next?

I also just received a quote of some service work to be done at the factory. They are quite busy with maintenance and service work but since they only build new on a order by order basis and from my knowledge operate as a cash/no credit line business they can downsize or even temporarily postpone production when orders are few and far between to control production costs. This is why and how they can shut down for a week or two here and there to build order inventory to allow them to open for a production run when numbers make busness sense. I too think we'll see them in for the long haul.

RE: Tires on fifth wheel

Problem I have with going with LT is that 16" LT-E tires typically have a maximum load rating of 3042 lbs @ 80 psi. The axles are 7,000 lb. axles; the fiver GVWR is 16,000; actual is nearer 14,000 (yes I have weighed just don't remember exactly).
Looks like a load range G tire would work but I doubt my rims are rated 110 psi for the 3750 lb rating; or even 100 psi for the 3550 lb rating per the Goodyear Unisteel G614 RST loading sheet.
Unless my current rims are rated for the G load range tires it would seem to me that LT "E" range tires are not the answer at least in my case. The "E" load range would be fine with my current loading but not for the GVWR rating.
Nothing is simple.
Bob
Checkout these tires. I have heard nothing but good reports about Denmans.Denman Express ST RadialsThey come in 10 ply rating 236/85R16 size with a rating of 3640 lbs per tire at 80 PSI and I believe are American made. Without changing rims and tires to get the G rating this might be your best alternative. My GVWR is 14400lbs for the 3072 lb rating of the Michelin XPS Ribs are just right. The Ribs are so beefy they probably would take a lot of abuse but I'd hate to go over the tire rating for very long especially at interstate speed. That's one thing with the Denmans, there does not appear to be a speed rating on their website. Most ST tires are rated for a lower speed at a given weight than LT tires. Good luck finding some other than Chinese Maypops
Just noted your post indicated you had both ride side tires blow. Any chance your side to side weight loading is putting more weight on the right hand side of your trailers?? You could have overloaded the RF when the RR blew first but you stated that you pulled over and stopped very quickly so I'm discounting that fact.

RE: New US border inspection rule

The policy stated that anyone including American citizens returning to the US at any border crossing could have any electronic storage device confiscated for review and analysis of the data stored within. The policy went further to indicated this could also be expanded to books, documents and pamphlets in your possession. Just cause was not needed to conficate the documents or eqiupment since the data would be copied for future anlysis and the equipment returned to you at some future time and the copied data destroyed if no illegal data was found. As stated by a US citizen the US border guards doing the confiscating who would be on American soil would appear to be violating the US fourth Admendment by search and seizure on another US citizen without just cause.
The policy stated that one thing to be scrutinized would be copyright infringement with movies and music. How they could determine whether mp3's on my IPOD were not copies of legally owned CD's I had at home is beyond me.
I myself have begun to setup online data storage site to keep all my P&C data including Internet favorites off my laptop when crossing the border. You never know what might be consider questionable by some border guards. The other option is to setup remote access to your home PC and load a fresh OS on your laptop.
This topic was discussed last week in another library snd was deleted when it became partisan so lets try and keep politics out if possible:W

RE: Recommendations for a Used TV less than 10 years old

Any Ford 6.8L V10, almost same gas mileage as 5.4L V8 in SD application. Very reliable and great puller. Post 2005 better if money allows, but pre 05 still excellent. Much better fuel mileage than the Ford 460 or the GM 8.1L big blocks. Stay away from older Dodge V10's. They have a nasty habit of detonating internally. Good luck hunting trucks. Great time to buy a truck as long as you don't have a trade or have to sell an older truck private.

RE: "The Cosmetics"

Not really an option, but a must have for us is access to refer and other features with all slides closed. Options/features that I consider important after owning 3 fifthwheels include fireplace (dont have yet), dual-pane windows (do have), ducted AC (do have), garden tub/shower (DW's must/do have), computer desk area not directly in front of television (do have), Z-frame giving full height basement (don't have), axles and wheels rated to only be at no more than 75% of their maximum rating when trailer is at it GVWR (no 6K lb axles on 14K lb trailer), hydraulic over electric disk brakes (don't have YET), free standing dinette with table leaf (Do Have). individual slide out controls (do have). Another requirement is bathroom counter tops and mirrors high enough that 6 ft tall people don't have to bend over to reach taps and when they look in the mirror standing up their heads are not cut off at the nose. This also applies to the shower head being high enough to not need to bend half way over to get the top of my head wet. As you can tell both my wife and I are tall and we looked at too many fifthwheel's that were designed by people under 5&1/2 ft. I agree with the other poster that said go to as many shows as possible and take lots pictures and notes of features and options.
Good hunting
